Is avocado good for menopause?

Avocado does help with menopause symptoms and is among the best foods for perimenopause and menopause.

Not only are avocados tasty but they’re also packed with nutrients, brimming with healthy fats, vitamins and minerals and fibre.

On top of this, just like bananas (which is why my banana berry smoothie is one of the best ways to start your day), avocados contain a lot of potassium.

Potassium helps to balance blood pressure and electrolytes, which – if you’re suffering with hot flashes – will help to provide relief and comfort.

Why am I craving chocolate in menopause?

Believe it or not, you don’t have to eliminate chocolate from your diet as you reach perimenopause and menopause.

In fact, some women may find their cravings for chocolate increase because of hormonal fluctuations. You may want chocolate because:

  • Chocolate may provide an emotional comfort and provide short term happiness when juggling different menopause and perimenopause symptoms.
  • Your body may signal a craving for chocolate because of specific nutrient needs. Dark chocolate, for example, contains magnesium. If your body is lacking in magnesium, you may start to feel an urge to consume dark chocolate.
  • You may feel a need to eat chocolate because you’re lacking in energy. Chocolate contains a lot of sugar (shocker!) and, therefore, can provide an instant energy boost. With perimenopause and menopause comes fatigue, so it can feel tempting to reach for the KitKats when you’re exhausted just to get through the day.
Cocoa beans, dark chocolate cubes and a pot of cacao powder for my avocado and chocolate mousse recipe.

Is dark chocolate good for menopause?

Dark chocolate provides certain health benefits during menopause, so you don’t have to eliminate chocolate all together from your diet. Make the switch to dark chocolate.

If you’re not a fan of dark chocolate, start on a smaller cocoa percentage and wean yourself upwards.

Dark chocolate is good for menopause because:

  • It contains a high amount of antioxidants including flavonoids, which will help with menopause stress and anxiety
  • Dark chocolate will cause endorphins and serotonin to release, making it easier to manage mood swings
  • It also has been linked to heart health benefits, such as improved blood flow and lower blood pressure
  • Dark chocolate is also a great source for minerals such as magnesium, which helps with the loss of bone density that naturally occurs during perimenopause and menopause

It’s important to note, though, that dark chocolate shouldn’t be consumed all the time. There are components that you should be cautious of, such as:

  • Dark chocolate contains a high number of calories (though, generally speaking, milk and white chocolate are higher). If you’re trying to lose weight, make sure you’re not consuming dark chocolate daily.
  • Dark chocolate contains caffeine, which can worsen certain symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and sleep disturbance.
  • Dark chocolate can range in quality. As with most foods, it’s important to check the ingredients. You should opt for higher cocoa content with lower additives and sugar to reap the benefits outlined above. Remember, though, if you’re not a fan of dark chocolate, adjust slowly.

Avocado and chocolate mousse recipe

If you’ve never tried this avocado and chocolate mousse recipe, get ready to have your mind blown.

You might be thinking “avocado? In a chocolate mousse? No thanks.”

And for that, I don’t blame you, but I urge you to give it a shot. Because here’s the thing: you can’t really taste the avocado. Instead, it makes the mousse silky, smooth and creamy, making your avocado and chocolate mousse recipe actually taste more like milk chocolate than dark chocolate.

This pudding is a real treat for the whole family – both for their bodies and their tastebuds.

Avocado and chocolate mousse recipe ingredients

For this avocado and chocolate mousse recipe, you will need:

  • 1 large, ripe avocado
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Essence
  • 4 tbsp Raw Cacao Powder
  • 2-4 tbsp Coconut Cream
  • 1-2 tsp Honey (optional)

Serves: 2

Time: 10 mins

How to make avocado and chocolate mousse

Despite the indulgent taste of this pudding, this avocado and chocolate mousse is actually incredibly simple to make. Just follow the steps:

Refrigerate your mousse for an hour if you have the patience. You can, if you choose to, eat it straight out the blender. (I won’t judge.)

Add your avocado, banana, vanilla essence, cacao powder, and honey to a blender

Next, add your coconut cream to the blender, making sure you’re generous with the amount you include. If you’re using coconut milk instead, use the thicker bit from the can

Blend your ingredients and form a smooth, creamy consistency

Transfer the mixture into ramekins, glasses or bowls

A twist on your avocado and chocolate mousse recipe (additional extras)

If you’ve tried this avocado and chocolate mousse recipe before and you want to add something new to it, there are a few things you can add to change the overall flavour.

Depending on how ripe your banana is, you may like to add a little dollop of honey.

You can also add cinnamon, ginger, and essential oils such as orange for the same texture but a different flavour profile. For a treat, top your mousse with sugar-free chocolate chips, berries, or nuts.

Avocado and chocolate mousse recipe – in a nutshell

As you enter perimenopause and menopause, you may find that you’re craving chocolate a little more than usual. However, the sugar content and additives found in milk and white chocolate is hardly nutritious and can actually worsen menopause symptoms.

So, to curb your chocolate cravings, opt for dark chocolate instead. This avocado and chocolate mousse recipe works wonders for menopausal women but will bring a smile and chocolatey faces to even the youngest of dinner guests!
